SEPTEMBER 2006 JOB OF THE MONTH

The Winston Towers 700 Building in Sunny Isles, which stands 202’ feet tall, has been updating its entire HVAC systems over the last year or so. New cooling towers were recently set with a 200 ton Link-Belt conventional with a luffing jib. Unfortunately, an older, circular cooling tower could not be taken down when the new cooling towers were set. This old tower was right at 65’ in and was out of reach for hydros in the 165-175 ton class; to reach this tower would have required either the big conventional crane or a larger hydro with a luffing jib. There were also several 800lb compressor motors that needed to be set that were very far in on the building.

Pyke Mechanical, the HVAC contractor on the project, had received a quote to mobilize a larger crane to reach these picks. The quoted price was $13,000 mobilization($6500 in, $6500 out) and $450 an hour with an 8 hour minimum. Harrison Crane proposed hoisting our SR4000 rooftop crane on the roof with our 165 ton hydro(Pyke also needed to set a 4500 pound air handler that could be handled with the 165) to set the compressors and to move the circular tower to where the 165 ton could reach it.

This plan saved the building and the contractor thousands of dollars. The SR4000 easily placed the compressors, and the circular tower was skillfully moved to the other side of piping running down the middle of the building to where the 165 could reach it. This job really showcased the capability of the SR4000.
